About Oudtshoorn Base
Oudtshoorn is situated in the Little Karoo 55 kilometers from the larger coastal town of George. The Little Karoo is cool and wet in winter and hot and dry in summer.
Oudtshoorn lies in a valley, with the Swartberg mountain range to the North and the Outeniqua mountain range to the South, providing spectacular views of snow covered mountains at times during the winter.
The annual rainfall is approximately 600 mm, peaking in spring and autumn while dramatic thundershowers can be experienced during summer.
Oudtshoorn is at an elevation of 1063 feet above sea level.
AIFA is situated at the Oudtshoorn Airfield which is located on the Western edge of the town. Oudtshoorn Airfield is frequently used for training camps, sky diving and hosts the annual National Scale Aircraft’s event

Crew Room
boasting full internet access and kitchen facilities. Here, instructors and students can relax after or between flights or use one of the many computer work stations to study, prepare for examinations, research or plan their flights using various aviation software.
House
The training center houses one large lecture room, for 50 students, 2 smaller lecture rooms that cfor 25 students each and five briefing rooms. It also houses offices for the training staff directly involved with flying training such as the flight and ground instructors.
Dispatch Center
At the heart of AIFA’s operations is a fully functional dispatch center from where flight bookings are managed, aircraft and instructor allocations are done, flight plans are filed and aircraft are dispatched.
Tower
Our tower complex is situated next to the hangar and houses our very own AFIS towemanned by fully qualified AIFA ATCs, providing flight information to Oudtshoorn air traffic as well as other services such as weather updates.
Hanger
At Oudtshoorn base, TFASA sister company of AIFA, owns a hangar large enough to house all of its aircraft used for flight training.
The general flying area in Oudtshoorn is divided into 10 sectors covering an area of approximately 4500 square nautical miles. AIFA developed routing procedures to and from the GFA, as well as radio procedures to ensure safety when training is being conducted. Runway 22/04 is 1.7 km long.
